Mrs. Barbara Mertz Obituary

Barbara Ann (Gimera) Mertz , 80, of Packerton village, Lehighton, Pa., passed peacefully into eternal rest on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at the Greenwood Center for Nursing and Rehab in Tamaqua.  She was the widow of the late Glenn Mertz, also of Packerton.  Born on August 22, 1942 in Coaldale, she was the daughter of the late George and Bertha (Borits) Gimera.  Prior to retirement, she was employed by the Lehighton Area School District spending many years cashiering at the Junior High, then Middle School and High School cafeterias.  She also worked in the cafeteria at Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital.  Barb was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church.  She felt most at home in the kitchen. She would cook for family any chance she had and her homemade pies, cupcakes and cookies often made their way to so many lucky others well beyond close family and friends.  Barb also enjoyed time in and around her daughter’s pool, all things Elvis, as well as watching the Hallmark channel and Doris Day movies.  She loved shopping, dining and gambling with her girlfriends, traveling when she was able and spending time with her family.  Barb had a huge heart and was generous beyond compare.  Surviving are daughters Karen (Bill) Nothstein of Andreas and Kathy (Greg) Koren of Northampton, grandchildren Hollie (Matt) MacMillen, Matt Nothstein, and Cassidy Koren, great grandchildren Lila and Graham MacMillen and loving granddogs.  A short public service will be held at the site of interment, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, N 4th Street, Lehighton, Pa. 18235 on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Christopher M. Zelonis officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Sts. Peter and Paul Church or the Alzheimer’s Association in her memory.
