Mr. Leon Eckhart Obituary

Mr. Leon L. Eckhart, 68, of Summit Hill, formerly of Lehighton, passed away Wednesday, July 10th at his residence. Born in Nis Hollow, Mahoning Township, on Tuesday, August 1, 1950, he was a son of the late Allen & Agnes (Ziegler) Eckhart. He served our country with the United States Army Airborne during the Viet Nam War attaining the rank of SP4. Leon was a 3 time recipient of the Purple Heart Medal  and also the Combat Infantryman’s Badge after engaging the enemy during the Viet Nam War. He was also the recipient of the Parachute Badge & the Viet Nam Service Medal.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a carpenter for various contractors in the eastern Pennsylvania region. He was a member of Dinkey Memorial Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ashfield, Pa., a Life member of The Lehigh Fire Co. #1, a Life member of The Lehighton VFW, a Life member of The Lansford AMVETS, a member of The Lehighton American Legion Post 314 and its Viet Nam Last Man’s Club, a member of The Egypt VFW,  a member of The Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #7, Allentown, Pa., The Coaldale Rod & Gun Club & The Lansford Italian Club. Surviving are two sisters, his twin, Lena, wife of Stephen Carey of Florida, Mary Arnold of Perkasie, 2 brothers, Teddy L. Eckhart of Nis Hollow, Timothy M. Eckhart & his companion Judy Sist of Mahoning Valley, nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Thomas & Richard. A Military Graveside Service in his honor will be held on Monday, July 15th at 11 a.m. in The Dinkey Memorial Cemetery, with Emma Weaver SALM officiating with Joint Full Military Honors under the direction of The Lehighton United Veterans Organization & The Viet Nam Veterans Of Carbon County. Memorial Contributions in his honor may be made to The Lehighton American Legion Post 314 Memorial Fund, 314 Veterans Avenue, Lehighton, Pa. 18235.
