Mr. Hilbert William "Hilly" Haas, 87, of Lehighton, passed into eternal rest on Thursday, Sept. 21st at St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem. He was the husband of Frances E. "Fran" (Pratcher) Haas. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on April 15th of this year. Born in Lehighton on May 14th, 1936, he was a son of the late Calvin & Rebecca (Nothstein) Haas. He served our country with the US Naval Reserve and was employed at his fathers grocery store for many years and worked as a school bus driver in the Lehighton area. Hilbert was an avid coin & post card collector. A pillar of the Lehighton Community, he was a member of the Jaycee's and served as a cubmaster for pack 82 and volunteered his time with the Lehighton Take Down Club. He was an original organizer/member of The Lehighton Halloween Parade Committee and was voted Lehighton Citizen Of The Year in 1989. His market baskets always took a blue ribbon at The Lehighton Fair. He was an active member of Salem Bible Fellowship Church, Mahoning Valley. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Susan, wife of Roger Wirth of Tioga, Pa. a son Kenneth Haas of Lehighton, 2 granddaughters, Katelin Rose & Chloe Elizabeth Wirth, a sister Betty Mae Forsythe, Nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by 4 sisters, Madeline Follweiler, Mildred Garvin, Ruth Rabenold, Miriam Parker & a brother Robert Haas. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday September 28th at The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, 190 S. 4th St., Lehighton with the Reverend Robert Johnson officiating. Call 9-11 a.m. Military Interment in the Lehighton Cemetery under the direction of the Lehighton Area UVO.
