Mr. Franklin D. Mertz, 90, of Mahoning Township, passed into eternal rest on Sunday, March 15th at The Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. He was the husband of the late Betty I. (Caffrey) Mertz who passed away May 6, 2023. Born in Mahoning Township on the family farm on Sept. 7, 1935, he was a son of the late John H. & Augusta A. (Evert) Mertz .He served our country with the US Air Force during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a truckdriver for IDC and later for NEMF in Lehighton. He enjoyed working the family farm and was known for his availability of black walnuts throughout the county. Frank was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Teamsters Union and held a Life membership at the Beaver Run Rod & Gun Club. Surviving are 2 daughters, Marla D. Lawson (Joe) of West Penn Township, Lisa A. Makofka (Doug) of Jim Thorpe, a son Robert Mertz of Lehighton, a sister, Fern Berger (Robt.) of Franklin Township, 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Steve Mertz, 5 sisters, Ada Nothstein, Florence Gerew, Gertrude Becker, Meta Kromer, Pearl Sittler, & 2 brothers, Stanley & Andy Mertz. Funeral Services will be private at the convenienece of the family. Memorial Contributions in his honor may be made to a charity or church on choice. Online condolences can be offered at ovsakfh.com
