Dwight Nothstein Obituary

Dwight Leslie Nothstein passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022 at the age of 72.  Dwight was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing.

 

Dwight was born on December 15th, 1949 in Mahoning Township, Carbon County, Pennsylvania to the late Sherwood and Helen Smith and was one of eight children.  After graduation Dwight enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the USS Intrepid where he served his 4 years of service.  After the Military Dwight worked several jobs till he started at the Carbon County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy in 1986.  He worked his way through the department eventually being elected as the Sheriff of Carbon County in 1996 which he served as Sheriff until his retirement at the end 2016. 

 

Dwight served his community in many ways.  He was an Eagle Scout of Troop 81 and later went on to become one of the founding members of Boy Scout Troop 145 in Lehighton.  Dwight was also a member of the Lehighton Fire Department for approximately 33 years where he went from a fire fighter up to the rank of Assistant Chief when he resigned at the end of 2021.  During his time as a member of the Lehighton Fire Department he also assisted with getting the Water Rescue/Dive Team implemented in the Department which is still currently in place today.  Dwight was a member of Lehigh Fire Company #1, American Legion #314, Beaver Rod and Gun Club, Pennsylvania Sheriff’s Association, Bowmanstown Fire Company, and Mahoning Township Fire Department Social Member.   

 

In his time off Dwight enjoyed traveling.  Dwight went on several cruises from Europe to Alaska along with traveling through the states on several vacations with family and friends.  He would enjoy spending time with family and friends.

 

Dwight married Orpha Marie Koch in 1976.  He is survived by his wife Orpha, son Christopher David Nothstein and son and daughter-in-law Douglas Jay and Nikki Jo Nothstein.   Also are his brother Wayne Nothstein and wife Donna, sister Susan Hunsicker and husband Robert, sister Sharon Smith husband Franklin, sister Ruthann Mriss husband Paul, brother Drew Nothstein, brother David Nothstein wife Lori, and sister Terri Czonstka and husband Jeff and lots of nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 15th 2022 at 1200 hrs in the Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, 190 S. 4th St. Lehighton PA 18235 with Rev. Dr.  Dean D. Frey officiating. Military interment will be held in the Lehighton Cemetery, Lehighton. Call Tuesday morning from 0900 to 1200 hrs in the funeral home.
