Mahoning Valley

“Stretch” Semmel

David Semmel, 62, of Lehighton, passed into eternal rest on Friday April 16th, 2021 at his home surrounded by family.

Born on August 2nd, 1958, he was the son of Dolores (Fogel) and (late) Lamar Semmel. After graduating from Lehighton Area High School in 1976, David proudly joined the PA Army National Guard in which he served honorably for 20 years attaining rank as Staff Sergeant.  During this time, he also worked various jobs in construction and for a sanitation company. He was of Lutheran faith and formerly attended church services at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Mahoning. David held social memberships at The Lehighton Orioles Nest #183 and The Lehighton Fire Company No. 5 where he looked forward to meeting up and talking with friends and family.

David was a sports enthusiast.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and playing darts.  He was an avid fan of The NY Mets, NFL Raiders, Notre Dame College sports, and NASCAR.  David loved to make people laugh and was constantly a jokester. Listening to music and spending time with his family and friends was something he appreciated as well as hanging out with his side kicks, Diane, Gina, and Janel.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son Cody Semmel, a daughter, Kylee Semmel, a daughter, Jodi Semmel, fiancé of Jaroe, a daughter, Jamie Semmel, fiancé of Natasha, a brother, Dennis Semmel, wife of Cheryl, four grandchildren: Vincent, Zion, Ajahlee, and Damonte, and two nephews, Austin, and Brandon. He was predeceased by his father, Lamar, and stepson, Tristan Wentz.

Growing up with Dave as my step-father was amazing. He was the best dad I could have ever asked for. Even though I had been estranged from him in the years since my mothers death Dave will always be my dad. I miss the way he used to push his false teeth out of his mouth and act like a werewolf and then gum us when we were little. He always knew how to make my mom feel better and laugh no matter how much pain she was in at the end. My mother and I loved Dave with all our hearts. He was the best thing that ever happened to us. He will be missed by many but always loved by all.

Dave was a really good friend and a great guy. It was sad to see him suffer with so many health issues later in his life. He was a tremendous athlete in his younger days. And an avid outdoorsman. He loved his kids in a big way! He will be sorely missed. RIP my friend! Love ya brother!!!
