Marvin Smith 94 of East Penn Township entered the house of the Lord on February 12, 2024 and was reunited with the love of his life Elaine (Berger) Smith who passed away on December 25, 2009, after 55 years of marriage. Born at home in Big Creek on February 11, 1930, he was the son of the late Perry and Mabel (Beer) Smith. He was a graduate of Lehighton High School class of 1948.
Marvin had worked for Lester Buck farm equipment, The New Jersey Zinc Company, Arner Lincoln-Mercury, Graver Motors, Earl Shoemaker, Houser Chevy, and Sander Olds doing body and fender work before retiring from Mack Trucks as a final mechanic in changeover after 25 years of service.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War serving as a Corporal in Korea from June 3, 1952, until April 3, 1953. He made the grand tour of the Punchbowl, Heartbreak Ridge, Whitehorse Mountain and Triangle Hill in the Kumwha Valley, Iron Triangle, Porkchop Hill, Jane Russell Hill, and Old Baldy which are all in North Korea today.
Serving in the 8th Army, I Corps, and X Corps, 2nd Chemical Mortar Battalion which was changed to the 461st Infantry battalion Heavy Mortar and his awards included an 8th Army Unit Citation, the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze stars for the Iron Triangle and Kumwha Valley battles, the Combat Infantry badge, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal.
Marvin belonged to VFW Post 7134, Beaver Run Rod and Gun Club, was a life member of East Penn and Franklin Township Fire Companies and was 71-year life member of American Legion Post 314. He was very proud of his 70-year voting record of never missing an election. He was a member of Ben Salem UCC.
He was the patriarch of the Smith clan and never failed to amaze his family and nieces and nephews with his memory of things until the very end and was predeceased by his brothers Roy and Doyle along with his parents.
Surviving are sons David and his wife Nancy of Mahoning Township and Gary and his companion Julia Schock of East Penn Township. Four grandchildren, Megan (Brian) Godard of Macungie, Nicole (Jon) Yenser of Breinigsville, Zachary (Rachel) Smith of Lehighton, and Brettany Smith of Sanford North Carolina. Six great grandchildren, Annalea Devolld, Elliot, Hudson, and Wells Godard, Regan and Cade Yenser who was his birthday buddy sharing February 11, although it was 91 years apart. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 19 at 11 a.m. at The Ovsak Funeral Home, 190 S. 4th St., Lehighton with the Reverend Randy Lentz officiating. Call 9-11 a.m. on Monday. Interment in Dinkey Memorial Cemetery, Ashfield, Pa. with Full Military Honors under the direction of the Lehighton Area UVO.
