Sergeant John A. Warkala

Mr. John A. Warkala, 97, formerly of Lehighton entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 23rd at Maple Shade Meadows, Nesquehoning, Pa. He was the husband of the late Edna M. Schuhler Warkala who passed away April 26, 2002. Born in Swoyersville, Pa. he was a son of the late Charles & Anna (Bitchel) Warkala. He served our country during World War II with the United States Army Air Corps attaining the rank of Sergeant while serving as a tail gunner aboard the B24 flying fortress. John retired from the Pennsylvania State Police in 1977 after 37 years of service. Sergeant Warkala served his police career mostly in Troop N & Troop M. He was Station Commander of the Fogelsville, & Lehighton State Police Barracks. He also served Carbon County as County Detective for 10 years before his retirement. He was a member of SS Peter & Paul RC Church, Lehighton, Pa. and the church’s Holy Name Society. He kept memberships with the Lehighton American Legion Post 314, The Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association and the Fraternal order of Police-Schuylkill Carbon Lodge #13. His favorite past time was spent with his flower garden and his house plants. Everyone knew dad on Friday and Saturday while he was visiting yard & garage sales in the local area. John is survived by a son, Gregory Warkala & his wife Lynn of Lehighton, a daughter Anna Marie Garcia, of Harrisburg, 3 grandchildren, Michael Warkala, Anthony Warkala, Christopher Garcia, 4 great grandchildren, nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Mildred Miner, Anna Udinski, & 3 brothers, Joseph, Charles, & Stanley Warkala. He was the last and oldest survivor of his immediate family. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 28th at 10:30 a.m. at The Ovsak FH, 190 S. 4th St., Lehighton with the Reverend Michael E. Ahrensfield officiating. Call 8:30-10:30 Tuesday. Interment in SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery North 4th St., Lehighton with full military honors under the direction of the Lehighton Area UVO.
